Beaufort County, SC : Father died and his daughter injured in a two-vehicle crash Saturday night on August 16, 2014
A Bluffton man was killed and his daughter injured overnight Saturday in a two-vehicle crash on S.C. 170 that forced authorities to shut down the highway for five hours.
Jonathan Friday, 29, was driving a 2012 Hyundai east on the state highway near the intersection of Bluffton Parkway at about 11:30 p.m., according to Beaufort County Coroner David Ott.
Friday's car was struck head-on by a 2003 Subaru traveling west, in the eastbound lane, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
Friday was wearing his seat belt but was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:14 a.m. Sunday, Ott said. His body has been sent to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for an autopsy, according to Ott.
His 2-year-old daughter, Sophia, was injured in the wreck and taken to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah.
A neighbor of the family in Parkside at Baynard Park said Sophia’s grandparents brought her home about noon Sunday with minor injuries. She bit her tongue during the accident and had abrasions from the straps of her car seat, Beverly Thorne said, but is doing OK.
Friday was a single father, Thorne said, and Sophia his only child.
The neighbors have begun collecting money to replace Sophia’s car seat, which was destroyed in the accident, Thorne said. They also have organized to have meals delivered to the family.
The driver of the Subaru, 62-year-old Denise Treier, was not wearing a seat belt and was airlifted from the scene to Savannah Memorial, according to the Highway Patrol. Her condition was not available Sunday.
The Bluffton Police Department, Bluffton Township Fire District and Beaufort County EMS were called to the crash scene. S.C. 170 between Bluffton Parkway and Gibbet Road was shut down until 5:30 a.m., according to Bluffton Police Maj. Joseph Manning.
The Highway Patrol's Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team is investigating the wreck. Attempts Sunday to reach the agency for more information were unsuccessful.
