Mobile, AL : One person died in a 4-vehicle crash on I-65 on Thursday, December 18, 2014
A North Carolina woman died on Thursday night after she was ejected from a 2002 Ford Escape while the driver attempted to avoid other cars involved in a four-vehicle accident on Interstate 65.
The Escape rolled over while trying to avoid a 2010 Ford Focus. It struck the Focus and another car, said Mobile Police Department spokeswoman Ashley Rains said.
Meeya Kim, of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. She was a passenger in the Escape.
She died of her injuries at a local hospital, Rains said.
Just before 9 p.m., officers responded to the crash near the Cottage Hill Road overpass. Two vehicles sustained rear-end damage while two others rolled over.
According to police, a preliminary investigation revealed the driver of a 2008 Mitsubishi Gallant was trying to move the vehicle to the shoulder of the interstate due to mechanical problems. The Focus approached and quickly slowed down.
As the driver of the Focus slowed, the car was rear-ended by the Escape. The Escape rolled over and struck the Gallant and Kim was ejected.
The driver of a 2001 Chevrolet Blazer attempted to avoid Kim and rolled over as well, Rains said.
No other injuries were reported in the crash. Rains said alcohol and drugs were not factors in the accident.
Interstate 65 was closed for hours on Thursday as authorities responded to the collision.
