Sacramento, CA : Two women, teenager and two toddlers killed in a head-on crash on Highway 12 in Sacramento County on Saturday evening, April 9, 2016
Two women, a teenager and two toddlers were killed in a head-on crash Saturday evening on Highway 12 in Sacramento County, the California Highway Patrol said.
Annalicia Mona Montoya, 21, Aaliyah Buenrostro, 17, and Adelaynna Ortiz, 3, were identified as three of the victims. All were from Modesto.
Buenrostro attended Modesto High School until her sophomore year when she transferred to the Robert Elliot Education Center. She was enrolled in the alternative school until she left last November.
Her grieving family lives in Salida and asked for privacy.
School officials said they will have grief counselors at the schools on Monday as a resource for students and teachers.
The crash happened about 5:35 p.m. on Highway 12 near Highway 160, just east of Rio Vista, officers said.
A Honda Civic carrying Montoya, Buenrostro, Ortiz and two others was going east on Highway 12, passing cars along the two-lane road but didn't get back into the correct lane in time, the CHP said.
The driver of the Honda lost control and the car crashed head-on into a Chevy Silverado with a family of four inside, officers said.
Montoya, Buenrostro, Ortiz and the other woman in the Honda were pronounced dead at the scene. The second toddler, a boy, died at a Solano County hospital, according to the CHP.
The initial investigation indicates at least some of the people in the Honda were not wearing seat belts, investigators said. The road was wet at the time of the crash, but it is unclear if that played a factor.
It's not yet known how the people in the Honda are related.
All four people in the Silverado were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
Highway 12 was completely blocked 2 miles east of Highway 160 for several hours but reopened about 10:30 p.m.
