One man was killed and another was critically injured in a head on crash

One man was killed and another was critically injured in a head-on crash early Saturday morning.

The crash happened shortly after midnight at 7373 E. Valencia Road, near South Kolb Road, Deputy Courtney Rodriguez, a spokeswoman for the Pima County Sheriff's Department said in a news release.

Andrew Gaines, 39, was traveling westbound on Valencia Road and a 61-year-old man was traveling eastbound when they crashed head on, the release said.

Gaines was pronounced dead at the scene and the other driver was taken to a hospital by helicopter where he remains in critical condition.

"It is believed the drivers involved were wearing seatbelts and that speed may have been a factor," the release said.

A third vehicle crashed into the rear of one of the other vehicles, but the 59-year-old driver was not injured.

The investigation is ongoing.
