Gary police are investigating a multiple-vehicle crash that resulted in the death of one person and injury of another around 9 p.m. Tuesday on a residential block in the city's Glen Park section.The Lake County coroner's office announced early Wednesday that Ronald L. Mayes, 48, of the 4100 block of Delaware Street, died at Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus as a result of blunt force trauma suffered in the accident, which occurred in the 3800 block of Massachusetts Street.Gary Police Sgt. Thomas Decanter said a man at a social gathering had become upset, then entered his vehicle and drove it in reverse "at an accelerated rate of speed in a circular pattern."The suspect struck three vehicles, Mayes and a 22-year-old man, who was later released from Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus after treatment for superficial injuries, according to Decanter.The suspect was pulled from his vehicle by bystanders, according to Decanter. Police believe he was battered by attendees of the social gathering.The suspect was taken to Methodist, then to Christ Advocate Hospital in Oak Lawn, Ill., for treatment. Charges are pending through the Lake County prosecutor's office, Decanter said.
