A 27-year-old Ashland City man was killed and two others were injured in a fiery, single-vehicle crash on Ed Harris Road Thursday afternoon.

Three men were traveling west in a 2004 Volkswagon Jetta around 4:50 p.m. Thursday. Driving around a curve, the Jetta left the road and crashed into a tree down an embankment, according to Tennessee Highway Patrol’s incident report.

David Mooningham, 27, was ejected from the vehicle, according to the report.

The driver, 18-year-old Ricky King III and passenger James Hastings Jr., 19, both of Ashland City, were transported and in critical condition, according to the Ashland City Fire Department.

“This afternoon we were saddened to work a fatality wreck on Ed Harris Rd,” the Ashland City Fire Department posted to its Facebook page Thursday. “The road was partially shut down except for all emergency vehicles. Initial reports were that the vehicle crashed and was on fire as the occupants were entrapped in the vehicle. The two surviving occupants were both in critical condition and were transported by ground. We are thankful for each department and their efforts this evening.”King was the only occupant wearing a safety belt, which could have made a difference, according to the officer's opinion noted in the THP report.
