Holly Hill, Fl : Passenger dies after vehicle crash on September 30th 2014.
A suspect who crashed his vehicle on U.S. 1 in Holly Hill while fleeing police could face more charges after the passenger in his vehicle has since died.
Police said they received a tip that Christopher Hammonds, who was wanted on a warrant, was at Luigi's Pizza on U.S. 1. When officers pulled up, they didn't even get a chance to grab Hammonds before he fled by driving over a curb and across Flomich Street.
Hammonds, however, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a pickup truck.
Hammonds' passenger, Brandi Machel, 41, was taken to the hospital where she later died. Machel was from Ormond Beach and worked as a bartender at a local restaurant.
"He had no concern for her safety or anyone else. That's clearly evident," said Holly Hill Police Chief Steven Aldrich. "It's a very tragic loss. She had no control over what was occurring, and it's very unfortunate."
"All you could hear was the tires screeching and all of a sudden the big 'bang,'" said witness Steve Hillman.
Aldrich made it clear his officers were not chasing Hammonds. They had a warrant for his arrest for failing to appear in court on felony charges, including resisting an officer with violence and carrying a concealed weapon.
Aldrich said when Hammonds saw police, he took off and sped toward an officer who had to move out of the way to avoid getting hit.
