Clatskanie, OR : Passenger killed in head-on crash with semi on Highway 30 Clatskanie On Wednesday December 23 2015
A passenger in a car that crossed the center line of Highway 30 near Clatskanie was killed in a head-on crash with a semi Wednesday morning.
Emergency crews responded to the scene at 8 a.m.
Oregon State Police said a 2004 Pontiac sedan was heading west on the highway when the driver crossed into oncoming traffic.
The car collided with an eastbound 1981 Kenworth truck.
Police said after the initial impact, the Pontiac went off the road and became partially submerged in a water-filled ditch.
The semi, pulling a trailer loaded with lumber, also left the roadway and went into the ditch.
The driver of the Pontiac, identified as Qiongfang Peng, 49, of Portland, was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries, according to police. Her passenger, Zai Yang, 55, of Warrenton, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The truck driver, Dennis Erickson, 37, of Sheridan, received minor injuries and was treated at the scene of the crash.
A large diesel spill resulted from the crash and crews continued working into Wednesday afternoon attempting to clean it up.
Highway 30 remained closed in both directions for hours. All lanes re-opened by 4:30 p.m.
