Washington Twp, PA : Four Kiski Area High School students and female motorist injured after school bus-SUV crash in Westmoreland County on Thursday afternoon, Sep 3, 2015
Four Kiski Area High School students and a female motorist were taken to area hospitals Thursday afternoon following a bus and car collision along narrow Lockwood Road in Washington Township.
The students were transported from the scene “out of precaution” and at their parents' request, said Scott Koter, district assistant superintendent.
The Moore School Bus Inc. vehicle had scrapes, dents and a bent wheel rim on the left side. The other vehicle, a GMC Yukon XL sport-utility vehicle, sustained heavy front-end damage.
No other information was available about its driver.
The bus left the high school at 2:55 p.m., and typically carries 25 students, Koter said. Three students were dropped off at their stops before the accident, he said.
The Westmoreland County Department of Public Safety said the accident was reported at 3:20 p.m.
Two “rescue buses” were sent to the scene to take home students who did not live nearby or who had not been picked up by parents, Koter said.
Some students not transported to the hospital had “bumps or bruises,” said Washington Township Assistant fire Chief Clayton Murphy.
“The kids were all calm. We assisted in walking them off (the bus),” Murphy said.
The driver of the SUV, whom township police did not identify, said her foot slipped off of the brake pedal and onto the accelerator as she was pulling from a driveway, according to a news release issued by the department.
Firefighters from Sardis, White Valley and Oklahoma assisted at the scene, along with Murrysville Medic One.
