Broad Ripple, IN : Blood drive honors five Bishop Chatard students injured in crash on I-74 Shelby County on Thursday, June 30, 2016

The Bishop Chatard Community is coming together, after five recent graduates were injured in a crash.

The wreck happened on Thursday in on I-74 Shelby County. On Saturday, there was a blood drive in honor of those students.

Friends, family and students started the holiday weekend with Indiana Blood Center's Bloodmobile, which parked at Broad Ripple Park.

They gave blood in honor of 18-year-olds Douglas Hirschfeld, Luca Ruby, Lewis Dilts, Timothy Brogan and Patrick Brogan.

"They're the best. They're funny and so kindhearted, and they care about all of our classmates and our classmates care so much about them. They're some of the best boys," said classmate Victoria Toetz.

Toetz donated blood for the first time.

"I wanted to donate blood because our boys used a lot of blood and you never know who the next person that's going to need it is," Toetz said.

Though Broad Ripple Lodge #643 hosts the drive each year, this call to action felt different.

"The bus pulled up and started getting things ready and probably within the first three minutes, cars were pulling up and people were getting out and lining up to donate," said Doug Eckhart, Senior Warden at Broad Ripple Lodge # 643.

The response to the blood drive was so great that every single spot was filled. Other volunteers were sent away to other locations to donate.

"Having people respond at a time of need is heartening and encouraging," Eckhart said.

"They've got so many people behind them, and so many people praying for them. We know that they are fighters and they are in the best place they can be,” Toetz said.

At the Broad Ripple location, Saturday's drive collected more than 20 pints of blood.

The driver of the other car involved in the crash has been identified as 19-year-old Cecilia Snow of Greensburg. She was taken to a hospital after the accident.

Timothy Brogan, Lewis Dilts, and Luca Ruby are still at Methodist Hospital, listed in critical condition.
