2 killed in Oceanside truck crash on I-5 north of Border Patrol checkpoint

The California Highway Patrol said two people were killed in a crash in Oceanside Saturday night when their Chevy Silverado truck hit a pole on Interstate 5 north of a Border Patrol checkpoint and burst into flames.The crash occurred at 10:41 p.m., according to a CHP statement.Officers said the occupants of the truck -- a male driver, a female passenger and two dogs -- died at the scene.
A witness reported seeing a pickup truck strike a light pole and explode, southbound on the San Diego Freeway, the CHP said.
The truck reportedly also hit a device used to measure semi-tractors when they are weighed, according to the statement.
Camp Pendleton firefighters assisted in extinguishing the fire.
Three of the four freeway lanes were blocked for 1 1/2 hours during the incident.Officers said it is unclear if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the wreck. It remains under investigation.
Due to the severity of the fire and the vehicle damage, CHP said positive identification of the victims is not known at this time.
