Fort Wayne ,IN :Fort Wayne Police chase ends in crash on Tuesday ,August 25th 2015
What started as an alleged shoplifting incident at the Meijer store on Indiana 37 on Tuesday escalated to a police chase and ended in a crash with four people injured.
The incident started at around 2:30 p.m. when an off-duty Fort Wayne Police officer at Meijer heard a description of the shoplifters and the vehicle they were in, said Fort Wayne Public Safety Director Rusty York. Using lights and sirens, the officer attempted to stop the silver Bonneville, but it started speeding up, eventually reaching speeds of about 60 mph, York said.
While being pursued, the vehicle turned onto Maysville Road and then turned west onto State Boulevard.
Lori Leonard had just left Blackhawk Christian School and was heading west on State when a silver car flew by her. "I thought, what an idiot," she said. Then she realized the car was being chased by police cars. When she got to the intersection of Reed Road and State two cars apparently had been sideswiped by the silver car.
York said a police supervisor was monitoring the chase, and "he was prepared to call off the pursuit" if it was deemed too dangerous to pedestrians or other drivers.
As the silver Bonneville approached the busy intersection of State and Coliseum boulevards a police officer stopped his car near Inwood Drive and attempted to deploy spike strips, meant to deflate tires that go over them.
Janet Hoover, who was at the stoplight heading east on State, watched it unfold. She said an officer jumped out of his car, popped open the trunk and threw out the stop strips. She said the silver car swerved to miss the police car and the stop strips, but slammed into an SUV facing west on State that was pulled over. The impact spun the SUV around so it was facing west on State and stopped the Bonneville. She saw passengers in the Bonneville holding their hands up.
