Cocoa Beach, FL : 12-year-old boy seriously injured after being struck by a car on Wednesday night, December 31, 2014

A 12-year-old boy will undergo surgery New Year's Day after he was hit by a vehicle late Wednesday night in a Brevard County neighborhood.

Cocoa Beach Police Department officers responded around 10:47 p.m., to the area near 201 Bahama Blvd., in regard to an accident with injuries.

When police arrived to the scene, they found Thomas Gregory in the roadway with serious injuries. The boy was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, in Orlando, with a broken left femur and broken right fibula and tibia.

Amy Gregory, the boy's mother, said her son is an active 12-year-old who attends Cocoa Beach Junior/Senior High School. Thomas Gregory was on the middle school basketball team in the fall.
"He can often be seen shooting hoops or throwing the football with his friends on our street," Amy Gregory said in an email to News 13. "It's a quiet street with lots of children outside playing."
Thomas Gregory was expected to undergo surgery at 11 a.m. Thursday, his mother said.

Police said the dark-colored SUV or van-type vehicle fled the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
