Buena Park, CA : Buena Park crash: Elderly driver hits group outside restaurant; 1 dead on April 26th 2014
Police say an elderly man drove his vehicle into a group of people waiting in line at a restaurant in Buena Park, killing one person and injuring several others.
The incident happened at 6 p.m. Friday outside Farrell's Ice Cream on the 8600 block of Beach Boulevard.
"It appeared that the vehicle struck a gate and the gate actually struck several of the pedestrians that were standing behind it. Some of them were pinned underneath that gate," said Officer Bill Kohanek with the Buena Park Police Department.
A 73-year-old woman who was pinned underneath the SUV died as a result of her injuries. Five others were transported to a local hospital. They included two girls, ages 12 and 13, an 11-year-old boy and two adults, both 40 years old.
The driver, said to be in his 80s, was detained for questioning. Authorities say the driver and his wife were leaving the ice cream parlor's parking lot when the crash happened. According to investigators, instead of hitting reverse, the driver accelerated forward and struck the group of people.
