A fuel tanker crashed on the road between Bend and Eugene and began leaking fuel Tuesday morning, closing the road in both directions.

At around 6:40 a.m., Oregon State Police officers received notice that 2007 Kenworth fuel tanker with an attached trailer had drifted from the shoulder of U.S. Highway 126 at mile post 21, near Leaburg, according to a news release from Oregon State Police. The vehicle began rolling, eventually coming to a stop near some small trees.

When officers arrived at the scene, both the tanker and the trailer had been breached, and were leaking fuel. A hazmat team is on scene working to contain the spill, according to the release.

The driver of the tanker, Hines resident Robert Reynolds, 31, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Riverbend Hospital in Springfield, according to the release.

The road is currently closed in both directions. Local detours are in place, and police are expecting the road to remain closed for most of the day.
