Duluth, MN : Two hospitalized following head-on crash on Highway 53 near Pike Lake on Tuesday, March 7, 2017

Alcohol may have been a factor in a head-on collision Tuesday between a wrong-way driver and another vehicle on U.S. Highway 53 near Pike Lake, authorities said. The crash sent both drivers to hospitals.

A 27-year-old Grand Marais man suffered life-threatening injuries in the collision on U.S. Highway 53 at Munger Shaw Road in Grand Lake Township, the Minnesota State Patrol said in a news release.

The man and the other driver, a 49-year-old Duluth woman, both were transported by ambulance to Duluth — the man to St. Luke’s hospital and the woman to Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center. The condition of the female driver was not immediately released by the State Patrol.

The man was traveling south in the northbound lanes in a 2002 Nissan Xterra when he struck the other vehicle, a 2004 Oldsmobile Alero. The crash was reported at 7:44 p.m., and alcohol was detected in the male driver’s system, the State Patrol said.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and Gold Cross Ambulance assisted at the scene.
