HIAWATHA, KS : Man dies in rollover crash on U.S. 36 west of Hiawatha on Sunday, 17th November 2024

A 76-year-old man was killed Sunday night when his car went off a northeast Kansas highway and crashed.

The accident happened at around 8:30 p.m. on U.S. 36 west of Hiawatha. The Kansas Highway Patrol reports an eastbound Kia SUV went into the ditch, struck a highway sign and then vaulted once it hit Goldfinch Road. The vehicle overturned multiple times and ejected the driver.

The man driving the Kia, Richard Childress of Hiawatha, died at the scene. The patrol's online crash log states he was not wearing a seat belt.

It's unclear what caused Childress' vehicle to leave the roadway.
