A 26-year-old woman was found dead inside her submerged car on Monday morning, according to New Smyrna Beach police.Investigators are not sure if Sarah Marx died before or during the crash into the Venetian Bay in New Smyrna Beach around 11 a.m.
"It was a tragic accident and I'm sure God will take her," said Trent Vesely, who tried to rescue Marx from her car.
Vesely lives across from the retention pond, heard a splash, saw the silver 2000 Acura four-door car going down and didn't hesitate to jump in the water, along with one or two other people.
"Her window was halfway down, made it worse, but like I said, she was unresponsive when I got to her. I was trying to wake her up or whatever. I was trying to get the seat belt you know... but the water pressure with the door," Vesely said.Investigators think the vehicle overturned once it hit the water, then got stuck on an angle in the muddy bottom.
"Responding police officers were also unsuccessful in rescuing the young woman from the sunken car," said New Smyrna Beach Police Department Sgt. Eugene Griffith. "The water was estimated to be 12-feet deep, with limited visibility.
