Big Pool, MD : Halfway man killed in I-70 crash near Big Pool on Monday, 19th August 2019
A Halfway man died when the truck he was driving left Interstate 70, struck several trees in the median and caught fire Monday night, according to Maryland State Police.
Troopers were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on westbound Interstate 70 at Exit 12 (Big Pool) at 9:17 p.m. Monday. A witness said a dark colored pickup truck passed their vehicle to the right at a high rate of speed, police said.
Once the truck passed, it abruptly changed back into the left lane. During the maneuver, the truck lost control, crossed the left shoulder and entered the median. The truck struck some trees before becoming fully engulfed in flames, police said.
Justin David Sproehnle, 38, was the driver and sole occupant of a 2018 Ford F-150. Police said speeding and reckless driving appear to be a contributing factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
The left lane of the highway was closed throughout the investigation. The roadway was fully reopened around 12:15 a.m. Tuesday.
