Topeka, KS : Woman killed in a wrong-way, head-on crash on Interstate 70 in west Topeka early Sunday, February 28, 2016
A woman who was killed early Sunday in a wrong-way, head-on crash on Interstate 70 in west Topeka was a Fort Riley soldier who joined the Army in March 2014, officials at the military installation near Junction City announced Tuesday.
Pfc. Coral Lynn Clark, 24, was a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear specialist from Fort Worth, Texas.
She was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade at Fort Riley.
Clark died Sunday following the crash that shut down I-70 for several hours.
In a news release issued Tuesday morning by Fort Riley officials, Clark was praised for both her strong work ethic and her singing ability.
“The officers, NCOs and enlisted members of the 1st Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Pfc. Coral Lynn Clark,” said Lt. Col. Clint E. Tracy, the brigade’s rear provisional commander. “Coral was a model Soldier and an inspiration to her peers and superiors alike through her work ethic and her singing.”
Clark joined the Army in March 2014. She hadn’t deployed. Her awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash that claimed Clark’s life occurred at 2:10 a.m. Sunday on westbound I-70, just west of S.W. Wanamaker Road.
Patrol officials said the crash occurred when a 2003 Kia Sorento that was traveling the wrong way on Interstate 70 — heading east in the westbound lanes of traffic — crashed into a 2007 Honda Civic that was traveling west in the westbound lanes of I-70, near the S.W. Wanamaker Road interchange.
Clark, who was a passenger in the Honda that was traveling in the right direction, was taken to Stormont Vail Health, where she died of her injuries. The patrol said Clark was wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the Honda, identified as Corey R. Jackson, 27, of Newark, Ohio, was injured in the crash and also was taken to Stormont Vail. The patrol said he, too, was wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the Kia that was traveling the wrong way, Fernando Osornio, 29, of Kansas City, Mo., also was injured and was taken to Stormont Vail for treatment, the patrol said. Osornio was wearing a seat belt.
