Harrisburg, OR : Two people killed, girl rescued after fiery crash on Interstate 5 north of Eugene on Wednesday afternoon, February 24, 2016
An Oregon trooper pulled a 5-year-old girl out of a burning wreck that killed her father and grandmother on Interstate 5 north of Eugene.
Authorities say the 1998 Tioga motorhome was southbound when it took the off-ramp to the Oak Grove Rest Area and drifted out of its lane, rear-ending the commercial truck on Wednesday night. The semitrailer was parked on the shoulder near milepost 206 in Harrisburg while the driver took his mandatory 10-hour break.
As Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Eli Chambers arrived at the crash scene, two witnesses from the rest area ran out to help. The trooper yelled into the wreckage and a 5-year-old girl cried for help, the agency said in a news release early Thursday.
Chambers and the two witnesses managed to break the side windows of the RV and pull the girl out.
The RV driver, Sandra C. Bishop, 69, of Albany and her son, Michael Bunten, 26, of Bellevue, Nebraska, died the scene, state police said.
Bunten's daughter was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend for serious injuries.
The commercial driver, Sergio A. Valente, 36, of Corona, California, was not injured. He was not cited, authorities said.
