Newark, DE :Woman cited in crash that flipped SUV on Tuesday, July, 14th 2015
A Newark woman was injured Tuesday evening in a two-car crash at the corner of Delaware Avenue and Academy Street, directly in front of the Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Co. fire station. The crash happened at approximately 5 p.m., according to Sgt. Gerald Bryda, a spokesman for the Newark Police Department.Bryda said Siyan Wang, 41, was driving a red Subaru Outback traveling east on Delaware Avenue and ran the red light at the intersection of Academy Street. Meanwhile, a white Chevrolet Malibu, which had the green light, was heading south on Academy Street and entered the intersection. At the last second, Wang attempted to swerve out of the way.“When [the SUV] swerved, its center of balance changed,” Bryda explained. “The [Malibu] hit its rear, and that caused it to flip over.”Wang was taken to Christiana Hospital to be treated for back and neck pain, as well as minor cuts, according to a New Castle County paramedic spokesman. The driver of the Malibu, Lindsay Steelman, 27, of Middletown, was not hurt.Aetna Chief A.J. Schall said he was driving on Academy Street, heading toward the firehouse, when he saw the vehicles collide. He and several other firefighters ran toward the crash immediately after seeing or hearing it.They were able to free Wang from the car in approximately 10 minutes, he said.Schall said there are typically several crashes at that corner each year.Delaware Avenue and Academy Street were closed for approximately an hour while police investigated and crews cleared the wreckage.Wang was cited for careless driving and failure to have proof of insurance. The sight of the Outback resting on its roof on a downtown street drew the attention of many onlookers, but despite the dramatic appearance, “in the end, it was a very minor accident,” Bryda said.
