Aspen, CO : Glenwood Springs man dies in UTV accident near Rifle on April, Saturday 8th 2017
A 54-year-old Glenwood Springs man died Saturday while riding his “side-by-side” off-highway vehicle near the 9-mile marker of the JQS Road near Rifle, according to the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators learned that Todd Sellie was crossing a snow bank on the road, lost control and rolled down a steep embankment several hundred yards, according to a statement from the county coroner’s office. Sellie was the sole occupant of the 1000cc 2013 Arctic Cat Wildcat side-by-side UTV (utility task vehicle). Sellie was not wearing a helmet and was wearing his seatbelt, the statement says. He was pronounced dead by coroner investigators at 6:18 p.m.
“A friend in the area notified 911 of the accident. He was later able to reach his friend and the ATV at which time he called 911 again and updated the situation,” a statement from the sheriff’s office says.
On Monday, the Garfield County Coroner’s Office contract forensic pathologist performed an autopsy. Sellie’s cause of death is multiple blunt force injuries and his manner of death is accident, according to a statement form the coroner. Toxicology tests revealed that Mr. Sellie had a blood alcohol content of 0.111 percent, which is over the legal limit to drive of .08 percent.
Emergency medical services responded from the Colorado River Fire Rescue. Care Flight was also contacted.
The coroner arrived on the scene and shortly after 6 p.m. Garfield County Search and Rescue removed the decedent, according to the official statement.
