Norfolk, VA : Portsmouth man dies in Newport News crash on Wednesday, August 31, 2016
A Portsmouth man has died in a multi-vehicle crash on the James River Bridge Wedneday.
Sgt. Michelle Anaya, Virginia State Police spokeswoman, said troopers were initially notified of a vehicle fire on U.S. 17 southbound shortly after 4 p.m. Upon arrival, troopers found a multi-vehicle accident that resulted in the death of Troy Mead Massey, 59, of Portsmouth.
Anaya said a 2015 Ford F250, driven by Charles Mitchell Jr., was traveling in the southbound lanes when he struck a 1996 Ford Crown Victoria driven by Massey. The impact of the crash caused the Ford Crown Victoria to catch fire and strike the vehicle in front of it.
Massey died upon impact, Anaya said. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
Mitchell was charged with reckless driving.
All southbound lanes on the James River Bridge were blocked for about four hours due the crash. Lanes were reopened around 8:30 p.m.
