Seymour, CT : N.Y. man killed after hitting DOT on Route 8 in Seymour on Thursday, May 19, 2016

A New York man was killed after the box truck he was driving collided with a Connecticut Department of Transportation vehicle on state Route 8, according to State Police.

Daniel Cormier, 61, was pronounced dead at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport following Thursday's crash that happened near Exit 20 in Seymour at about 12:10 p.m.

Cormier’s box truck struck a DOT crash vehicle, a dump truck designed to absorb strikes from motor vehicles. Cormier had to beextricated from the wreckage that was wedged several feet in the rear of the DOT truck.

DOT spokesman Kevin Nursick said crews were patching potholes in the area. No DOT workers were injured, Nursick said. He said the crash truck’s purpose is “to protect our vehicles and our workers in a work zone.” Parts of the rear of the crash truck collapse when it is struck by the vehicle.

Nursick said the driver of the crash truck “is OK, but a little rattled.”
The crash closed the right lane of southbound Route 8 in Seymour. The Exit 22 entrance ramp in downtown Seymour was also closed to reduce the volume of vehicles passing through the accident scene. Traffic was detoured amount two miles on local streets to reach the next entrance past the accident.

Thursday as a deadly day on Route 8. Shortly after 1 a.m., several miles south on Route 8 in Shelton, two people were killed in a crash. State Police say a wrong-way driver collided head-on with another vehicle near Exit 13. Killed in the crash were Fernado J. Moreno-Rivas, 30, of Main Street in Stratford, and Kelly M. Wootten, 29, of Balance Rock Road in Seymour.

Early Friday morning, there was a third crash on Route 8. According to Echo Hose Hook and Ladder around 1:45 a.m., two companies were dispatched to Route 8 north in the area of Exit 13 for a motor vehicle accident. Squad 1 arrived to find one vehicle into a tree. One occupant was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries. Squad 1 & Engine 32 remained on scene for scene protection until the vehicle could be removed.
