Ocala, FL : Two people injured in a two-vehicle crash on Southwest 32nd Street in Ocala on Friday, October 10, 2014
Two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash that blocked traffic for several hours Friday afternoon.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers said a DHL van driven by Rose Marie Dawson-Haislit, 53, of Ocala was heading east on Southeast 32nd Street when Dawson-Haislit lost control. The van crossed the median and went into the path of a Sherwin Williams box truck being driven by Christopher James O'Brian, 33, of Ocala. Upon impact, troopers said, the van ended up on the westbound lane and the box truck stopped on the north shoulder.
A Marion County Fire Rescue spokesperson said dispatchers began getting calls about the crash at 2:54 p.m. and rescue personnel arrived at 3:01 p.m. The official said it took 15 firefighter/paramedics, along with firefighter/EMTs from eight units, 22 minutes to extract both drivers from the mangled vehicles.
Dawson-Haislit was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where she remained in critical condition late Friday night. It was not clear whether Dawson-Haislit was wearing her seat belt. O'Brian, who was wearing a seat belt, also was taken to ORMC, where he was treated and released, a hospital spokesperson said.
Troopers said it was not known if speed was a factor or if the injured drivers were wearing seat belts.
