Two people are dead after a three-vehicle fatal crash that shut down the highway for nearly six hours Friday night.
Police confirmed that a 44-year-old woman and a 41-year-old man have died after the crash on I-271 in Richfield.
The accident, which occurred about 5 p.m., involved a pickup truck and two SUVs.
Police say a pickup truck was southbound on I-271 when the driver, a 41-year-old man, hit the back of an SUV. The pickup truck driver then lost control, crossing over into the northbound lanes and colliding head on with another SUV.
The SUV that was struck head-on was carrying a 44-year-old woman, who died at the scene.
The pick-up truck driver was taken by LifeFlight to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
The Summit County Medical Examiner will released the names of the deceased after family is notified.
Two other people, who were riding in the SUV that was rear-ended, were taken to an area hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening. No word on their condition.
"When I got stopped, set my brakes, I just said to myself 'Oh my God,' " said truck driver John Coe, who was just a few cars behind the accident.
Speed and inattention are being blamed.
The crash resulted in I-271 being closed between Mileposts 9 and 10. That is near the I-77 interchange, just south of Broadview Road.
Motorists were asked to avoid the area, and there was a significant backup.
