Davenport, FL : One dead, five hurt after I-4 crash in Polk County on Saturday night, July 5, 2014
One person was killed and five others injured when an sport utility vehicle rolled on the U.S. Highway 27 ramp off Interstate 4 in Davenport on Saturday evening, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.
Around 7:25 p.m. a 2003 Ford Expedition driven by Michele Walsh, 24, of Kissimmee, was westbound on I-4 and entering onto the off-ramp when Walsh lost control of the SUV for unknown reasons, deputies said.
The vehicle slid into the outside lane, narrowly missed striking a truck that was stopped on the off-ramp, and then flipped, ejecting front-seat passenger Lascelles Gabbidon II, 36, of Kissimmee, deputies said. Gabbidon was taken to Heart of Florida Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Five passengers -- Angela Marie Edwards, 24; Eric Evering, 6, Dhimani Edwards, 12, Sanjay Edwards, 11, and Krishna Edwards, 14, all of Jamaica -- were taken to local hospitals. Eric Evering was admitted to Tampa General Hospital in stable condition; the others were treated and released, deputies said.
Walsh, who declined medical treatment, was wearing a seatbelt, but it appears none of the other occupants of the SUV was wearing theirs. .Factors that may have contributed to the crash were wet road conditions, speed and bald tires on the SUV, deputies said.
The investigation is ongoing.
