Pittsfield, MA : Williamstown man dies after Tamarack Road crash on wednesday, July 16, 2014

A longtime psychology professor of the former North Adams State College died on Wednesday after suffering a medical issue while driving, causing the vehicle to veer off-road and into a tree, just west of Bousquet Ski Area.

William S. Anderson Jr., 88, of 540 Water St., in Williamstown was transported from the crash site to the Emergency Department at Berkshire Medical Center. According to a report issued Thursday night from the Pittsfield Police Department, Anderson died a short time later.

Anderson was traveling in the 2005 Honda Civic with his wife of 63 years, Lila Anderson, 87. According to the report, she suffered serious injuries in the crash and remains hospitalized.

The single-car accident itself remains under investigation. It occurred at approximately 1:39 p.m. on Wednesday in front of 591 Tamarack Road. The Andersons were traveling in an easterly direction when William Anderson Jr. "suffered an apparent medical condition" leading up to the crash, the report said. The accident caused the car's airbags to deploy.

A portion of Tamarack Road was shut down to traffic for more than an hour while an accident reconstruction team worked at the scene.

Members of the Pittsfield Police and Fire departments and Action Ambulance Service were dispatched to the location, where ambulance and fire medics tended to the Andersons before transporting them to the hospital.

According to William Anderson Jr.'s obituary, which appears in Friday's paper, the Andersons have been Williamstown residents since 1962. William Anderson taught for 26 years in the psychology department at the former North Adams State College, now the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

He was a board member of the Northern Berkshire Mental Health Association and the Williamstown House of Local History.
