Huntsville,AL : Woman dies from injuries in wreck on January, Monday 15th 2018

A Lauderdale County woman, seriously injured in a Monday afternoon traffic accident, died at Huntsville Hospital as a result of the injuries.

Officials with Huntsville Hospital said 81-year-old Joann Skipworth of Florence died Monday at the hospital.

Cpl. Scott Simpson of the Quad-Cities State Troopers Post said Skipworth was flown to Huntsville after she was involved in the head-on crash that happened on Alabama 20 west of Florence.

Emergency personnel at the scene of the wreck said when they arrived, the victim was unresponsive.

Firefighters from Central and Oakland volunteer departments had to remove the passenger side door of the car Skipworth was in before they could get her out of the car.

Her husband, James Skipworth, 80, and Tamra Sharp, 59, of Florence were also injured in the two-car accident. Both remain in Huntsville Hospital.

Hospital officials said James Skipworth is in serious condition, while Sharp is in the orthopedic trauma unit in good condition.

Simpson said James Skipworth and his wife were flown from the scene to Huntsville Hospital.

“We closed the highway for nearly a mile as we landed two helicopters,” said Lt. Tyler Faries of the Central Fire Department.

Sharp was taken by ambulance to Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital, and then transported to Huntsville Hospital.

Reports indicate the crash happened at 3:35 p.m. on Alabama 20, just of Florence in the Central Heights community. Simpson said it was near the Lauderdale 228 intersection.

Simpson said James Skipworth was driving a 2017 Toyota RAV4 while Sharp was driving a 1999 Jeep.

Emergency personnel said the two cars hit head-on in the southbound lane.

The crash was so serve that officials at the scene said there was a debris field that covered 50 feet.

Skipworth is the fourth person to be killed in traffic accidents so far this year in northwest Alabama and the southern Tennessee counties of Wayne and Lawrence counties.

The accident remains under investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Quad-Cities State Troopers Post.
