Anchorage , AK : 60 - years old pedestrian struck and killed by Vehicle on along Muldoon Road on Saturday night , January 10th 2015

Anchorage police have identified the pedestrian struck and killed by a vehicle on Muldoon Road on Friday night as 60-year-old Peter Andrew Albert of Anchorage.

The incident occurred about 8 p.m., when police received a report of a crash near 12th Court and Muldoon Road. Witnesses told police that a pedestrian, later identified as Albert, was trying to walk west across Muldoon Road outside of a crosswalk when he was hit by a Ford Explorer headed south, police wrote in a statement Saturday.

Several bystanders performed CPR on Albert until paramedics arrived and took him to a local hospital. He was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later.

The 19-year-old driver of the Ford Explorer, whose name was not immediately released, remained on scene and was cooperative with police, the police statement said. Blood samples were taken to determine if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash. No citations have been issued at this time, and the incident remains under investigation, police said.

“This tragedy is a reminder to us all to use care when crossing the roadway,” police wrote in the statement.

This is the latest crash involving a pedestrian on Muldoon Road, a corridor being targeted by state officials for safety improvements. In some places, the crash rate on the corridor is three to four times higher than the state average for similar roads, according to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. A raised median and midblock safety areas are among the recommendations to lower the crash rate along the corridor and create a safer environment for pedestrians.
