A Valparaiso man was severely injured during a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 31 in Tipton County Tuesday, according to an Indiana State Police press release.
Bradley Mitzgate, 58, Valparaiso, was transported from the crash scene via Life Line Helicopter to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He sustained life threatening injuries. The driver of the other vehicle, Brian Wright, 45, Kokomo, was not injured.
ISP, the Tipton County Sheriff’s Department and the Howard County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene near the Indiana 931 interchange at around 10:52 a.m.
The preliminary crash investigation by ISP Trooper Adam Duffitt revealed that Mitzgate was driving a 2016 Hyundai Sonata southbound on U.S. 31, approaching the interchange for State Road 931. The press release states Mitzgate was in the wrong lane to remain on U.S. 31 and made a sweeping right turn to get on the U.S. 31 collector ramp. The Hyundai hit a 2015 Ford F-350 that was pulling a fifth wheel camper. The Ford, driven by Wright, was traveling southbound on U.S. 31 and was on the collector ramp when the Hyundai crashed into it.
On the scene, firefighters from Sharpsville and Taylor Township had to extract Mitzgate from the vehicle.
This crash is still under investigation. According to the press release, at this time neither the use of alcohol nor narcotics is suspected as having contributed to the crash.
