Lowell, MA : Motorcyclist seriously injured in Lowell crash on Sunday afternoon, July 17, 2016
An unidentified man who was riding a motorcycle that collided with a Honda Civic at Gorham and Saratoga streets in Lowell Sunday afternoon was flown to a Boston trauma center with serious injuries.
Emergency crews were called to the intersection about 4 p.m., and found the rider still down in the street with what appeared to be severe injuries to his legs.
Several witnesses at the scene said the man remained conscious.
Three witnesses, all of whom declined to give their names, said the motorcycle was heading inbound on Gorham Street as a gray Honda Civic was crossing Gorham Street from Carlisle Street toward Saratoga Street. The motorcycle and Civic collided in the middle of Gorham Street, the witnesses said.
One of the witnesses said the motorcycle appeared to be going the speed limit. Another witness said she believed the Civic hadn't stopped at the stop sign at the end of Carlisle Street before crossing Gorham Street.
Police at the scene declined to comment.
Those witnesses, and police-radio broadcasts, all said the driver of the Civic fled the scene on foot. Two of the witnesses said a young man who later returned to the scene and spoke to police was the man who was driving the Civic.
Police had that man sit on a curb at the scene as they spoke to him at length, but he was never placed in handcuffs.
The motorcycle rider, who appeared to be a middle-aged man, left the scene in an ambulance with paramedics, and was taken to Lowell General Hospital where a MedFlight helicopter was waiting to fly him to Boston.
Several people at the scene ran to help the motorcycle rider after the collision, including one of the witnesses who spoke to The Sun, according to others at the scene.
That man admitted he did what he could to help the rider, but he still declined to give his name, saying he had to help since the man was so seriously injured.
