Man killed in crash near Selma,California
An Armona woman drove through a stop sign near Selma on Monday, slamming into another vehicle and killing one passenger, officials said.
Tonya Lynn Menzie, 47, was driving south on Clovis Avenue around 5:30 a.m. when she entered the Mountain View Avenue intersection without slowing, said the California Highway Patrol.
Around the same time, three men from Selma were passing through the intersection in a Honda Civic. Menzie’s Ford hit them going about 35 miles per hour, sending both vehicles off the south road edge and into a 6-foot metal fence, a news release said.The right-front passenger in the Honda sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities did not release his name on Tuesday, identifying him only as a 64-year-old Selma resident.Investigators said the Honda had the right of way in the intersection, which has posted stop signs for the north and southbound lanes, but none for east-west traffic.Driver Jorge Hernandez, 21, suffered major injuries. He was taken by helicopter to Fresno’s Community Regional Medical Center. Hospital officials could not be reached to comment on his condition late Tuesday. Passenger Frederico Garcia, 28, went to Selma Community Hospital with minor injuries.Menzie and her passenger, 18-year-old Samantha Menzie, also sustained minor injuries.
They were released at the scene to seek their own aid.The crash remains under investigation by the CHP. It could not be determined Tuesday if charges are pending against Menzie.
