Ocala, FL : Motorcyclist killed in crash on SR 200 Tuesday night, July 12, 2016

A motorcyclist died Tuesday night after he was hit while riding on State Road 200.

According to Ocala Police Department officials, the crash occurred in the 2100 block of Southwest College Road — or State Road 200 — at 8:09 p.m.

The rider, Aaron Pollock, 30, of Ocala, was eastbound on a 2016 Honda VTX 1300. Officers said a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta that was leaving the Target parking lot pulled into traffic and struck the motorcycle.

Two people, including off-duty OPD Officer Derrick Vitale, came upon the crash and began life-saving efforts on Pollock. He was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where he died.

Officials recovered a helmet at the location. It was not clear whether he had been wearing the helmet. It is not a law in the state that motorcyclists have to wear helmets.

The driver of the Jetta, Mary Diaz of Hernando, was taken to West Marion Community Hospital with a medical condition, according to OPD.

Suzanne Santangelo, the spokeswoman for Ocala Regional Medical Center, which owns the hospital, said the 58-year-old woman was treated and released.

Four passengers — three children, ages 10, 12 and 15, and 36-year-old Angie Watts — were in the car, police said. They were not injured.

OPD officials said the number of people killed this year in traffic-related crashes inside the city limits is 10; the same number as for all of 2015.

Records kept by the local Florida Highway Patrol office and the OPD show that in 2015 there were six motorcycle fatalities; three in the city and three in the county. As of July 12, they have been five motorcycle deaths this year; four in the city and one in the county.

This time last year, there were 45 traffic-related deaths throughout the county. So far this year there are 42. In 2015, there were 82 traffic-related deaths countywide.

Police said the investigation into Tuesday's crash is ongoing.
