Police say alcohol was a contributing factor in a Friday night fatal hit-and-run in north Charlotte. A woman died and a man was critically injured after their moped was struck by a car.
At approximately 11:22 p.m., police say Robert Leahy was driving his Infiniti on the 10000 block of Old Statesville Road and rear-ended a moped. The moped became lodged in the front of the Infinity, the driver and passenger on the moped were thrown off.
The driver of the moped, 19-year-old Philip Black, was critically injured and taken to Carolinas Medical center. The passenger, 22-year-old Valerie Shaak, was pronounced dead on scene.
According to police, Leahy did not stop driving at the scene of the crash, instead he reportedly drove about a mile before parking his vehicle. Police say he then fled on foot and was located about a quarter mile away by K-9 and helicopter units.
Leahy was taken to CMC-Main with minor injuries and was released. He was then taken to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police headquarters before being transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
Police say the crash is still under investigation and believe alcohol was a factor.
Robert Leahy was charged with driving while impaired, no operator's license, two counts of felony hit-and-run, felony serious injury by vehicle, and felony death by vehicle.
