Temple,TX : Couple dies in 3-vehicle wreck in Temple on September, Monday 18th 2017

An elderly married couple died Monday morning in a three-vehicle fatality accident on South Fifth Street in Temple.

Pronounced dead were William and Martha Schumann of Meridian, Bell County Justice of the Peace David Barfield said Tuesday.

The Schumanns are the parents of Bell County Precinct 3 Commissioner Bill Schumann.

Schumann briefly spoke Monday with a Temple Daily Telegram reporter.

“This is a real shock to the family and we’re blessed they were able to live alone and have productive lives,” Schumann said. “We’re grateful for that.”

The accident that occurred at about 11:25 a.m. Monday was at the intersection of South Fifth Street and Fryers Creek Drive, Temple Fire & Rescue spokesman Thomas Pechal said Tuesday.

A Temple Police officer began helping the injured couple at the scene. Temple Fire & Rescue responders arrived and found four patients, and three were transported to the hospital by American Medical Response. One patient refused an offer of medical transport, and the firefighters extricated one driver, Pechal said.

The Schumanns were transported by ambulance to Scott & White Medical Center-Temple, where they later died, Temple Police Officer Shawana Neely said.

Bell County Judge Jon Burrows emailed county officials and others Tuesday to let them know about the tragic accident.

The driver of a vehicle apparently sideswiped a vehicle and then careened head-on into the Schumanns’ vehicle, Burrows said.

Sen. Dawn Buckingham, R-Lakeway, tweeted a response Tuesday when she learned about the tragic deaths of Schumann’s parents.

“Ed and I send our condolences and prayers to Bell Co. Pct. 3 Comm. Bill Schumann and his family,” Buckingham said.

No information was available Tuesday about funeral arrangements.

No autopsies will be performed, Barfield said.

The Temple Police Department’s Traffic Unit is investigating, Neely said.

The police spokeswoman didn’t provide any answers Tuesday to Telegram questions asking if anyone will be charged in connection with the two deaths.
