Waco, TX : I-35 crash in Waco kills 1, injures 4 others on Thursday, February 16th 2017
A back-seat passenger was killed in a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 35 near downtown Waco on Thursday afternoon, Waco police Officer Garen Bynum said.
Interstate traffic came to a halt at about 3:40 after three passenger vehicles and a tractor-trailer collided on northbound I-35, near the Fifth Street exit, Bynum said. Vehicle debris was scattered across the roadway as police responded and found a female passenger in the sedan had died.
"Officers were working an (unrelated) traffic crash on the southbound side of I-35, right across from Baylor University campus, when they were notified of a severe accident in the northbound lanes," Bynum said. "The first officer that was able to break away to the scene over here … he noticed that there were several vehicles scattered across the roadway."
The 18-wheeler, a white 4-door sedan, a dark-colored SUV and a white mini-van were involved in the northbound crash, Bynum said. Officers remained at the crash site attempted to determine the cause of the crash.
The identity of the person who died was not immediately available, pending notification of next of kin.
"We also had four other victims, two males and two females, from the other vehicles involved," Bynum said. "They sustained injuries, but they were all in stable condition at a local hospital receiving treatment."
Shortly after the crash, witnesses, other motorists and officers helped render aid to victims involved, Bynum said. Police closed the interstate at 17th Street as investigators reconstructed the crash.
The Baylor University Police Department and the McLennan County Constable for Precinct 1, Walt Strickland, assisted with traffic control.
Bynum said it is too early to comment on how the accident happened.
"There are so many vehicles involved and skid marks involved across the interstate, so we are trying to figure out what started this at first," he said.
