A female Good Samaritan killed Monday night while helping a disabled motorist on the Beachline Expressway has been identified.Dana Nelson, 47, a Mears taxi driver, was killed in the accident on westbound State Road 528 near Dallas Boulevard.
Nelson had parked her Mears taxi on the side of the road and got out of her vehicle to help a man whose pickup truck had broken down, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
That's when a 2015 Dodge Dart driven by 26-year-old Michael Hook struck Nelson and her 2014 Toyota Camry, killing her, troopers said.
Hook, of Merritt Island, stayed at the scene and cooperated with state troopers.
"We are deeply saddened by the news of this accident. Dana Nelson provided an important service to her passengers while driving a taxicab in Central Florida. Her service and desire to help others was shown last night as she attempted to assist a disabled motorist on the side of the highway," Mears Transportation Group said in a statement.
The westbound lanes of the Beachline were closed at about 9 p.m. Monday and were opened early Tuesday morning.
The FHP does not think this was an alcohol-related accident. The crash remains under investigation.
