Grantsville, UT : Salt Lake man killed, 3 others injured in I-80 crash on Monday, July 25, 2016
Authorities are investigating a fatal crash on I-80 that left a Salt Lake man dead and three others seriously injured.
The incident happened about 2 a.m. Monday when a Honda Civic occupied by four people was heading west near Grantsville. The driver failed to negotiate a curve in the road and left the highway to the right, where he struck a large two-post highway sign, said Utah Highway Patrol trooper Lawrence Hopper.
The vehicle vaulted off a dirt berm and rolled end over end several times, according to the UHP, coming to rest right side up. One of the occupants, Scott Newman, 34, of Salt Lake City was ejected and died at the scene, while two other occupants were transported to the hospital by helicopter and one by ground ambulance.
"Impairment is being investigated as a factor," the UHP said in a statement. Newman was the only occupant in the vehicle who was not wearing a seat belt, according to troopers.
