Man Charged In Fatal Crash That Killed Motorcyclist

A 30-year-old man has been charged in connection with a fatal crash that left a motorcyclist dead on Interstate 40 east early Monday morning.Metro Police charged Jose Miguel Castillo-Calles with vehicular homicide by intoxication and driving without a license.
The crash happened around midnight near the I-40/I-24 split in the eastbound lanes. Police said Castillo-Calles was driving a Volkswagen Passat when he struck a Kawasaki Motorcycle, ridden by 48-year-old John R. Johnson of Mt. Juliet, from behind. The vehicles became stuck together, and hit the guardrail on the left shoulder of the interstate. They then traveled across the traffic lanes and struck the guardrail on the right shoulder. Johnson was thrown off the motorcycle after impacting the second guardrail. He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.Castillo-Calles fled the scene on foot, according to police. He was apprehended a short time later after an officer spotted him walking on 2nd Avenue South near the Howard Office building. Police said he performed poorly on field sobriety tests, and a blood sample was drawn at Metro General Hospital for analysis.
