Salisbury Mayor Karen Alexander was hospitalized after she ran a red light and hit another car on Thursday afternoon, police said.
Alexander was taken to Novant Health Rowan Regional Medical Center. She was not listed as a patient late Thursday, a hospital spokeswoman said. Observer news partner WBTV quoted a police source as saying the mayor’s injuries were non-life threatening.
The mayor was driving a 2014 Hyundai northeast on South Fulton Street when she ran the red light at West Monroe Street and hit a 2002 Lexus, police said in a statement. The driver of the Lexus and his passenger were uninjured, police said. The Lexus traveling southeast on West Monroe.
Police cited Alexander for “entering the intersection while the traffic signal was emitting a steady red light in her direction,” according to the department’s statement.
Just before the wreck, Alexander participated in an event where she greeted former Gov. Bev Perdue, WBTV reported. Rowan-Salisbury Schools sponsored the event at Wallace Educational Forum, the school system’s administration building.
