Albuquerque , NM : One man killed in crash vehicle crashed and burst into flames near the I-40 westbound Carlisle on Thursday , March 5th 2015

Albuquerque police confirmed a man was killed when a vehicle crashed and burst into flames near the I-40 westbound Carlisle exit Thursday.
Witnesses at the scene said that if the man survived the initial impact, there was no time for him to get out of the car before it caught on fire.
Investigators are still working to figure out exactly what happened, but their initial explanation is that the car hit the side of the bridge on the off-ramp from westbound I-40 to Carlisle and then fell off the ramp and near the highway.
The vehicle landed upside down under the overpass before bursting into flames.
"It appears that either the individual misjudged where the left-hand turn was to get onto Carlisle, or just completely lost control of his vehicle, went on to that ledge there and then the vehicle rolled off from there," APD spokesperson Tanner Tixier said.
Other witnesses said the man was speeding and weaving in and out of traffic before the crash, though police have yet to confirm that detail.
Mark Aiuto watched helplessly as the car burst into flames and said the car sped past him just before the crash.
"I looked in the rear view and a car was just cooking up to me real fast," Aiuto said. "He swerved right and went around me, then I swerved left. [The man] cut off a bunch of cars and took off."
Less than a minute later, he came upon the crash and pulled over in an attempt to help. He confirmed what investigators said – that even if the man survived the initial impact, there was no way to get him out of the vehicle.
"The flames had started in the back of the trunk and it was upside down, so I pulled over real quick to see if I could try to get anybody out of the car, but there just wasn't a chance," Aiuto said.
"It looked like the gas was running out of the back of the car and running down underneath the hood because it was upside down. And within just a few second, the rest of the fumes of the gas ignited, and once it ignited, it took off like a huge fireball. Within 15-20 seconds after that, the back tires burst. The flames just rolled all the way to the front."
The name of the man has not been released.
I-40 westbound at San Mateo was shut down while firefighters put out the fire around 1:30 p.m. The incident caused a major backup for hours after the incident.
