Claremore, OK : Woman dies in wreck on rain-soaked Will Rogers Turnpike on Tuesday morning, April 19, 2016
At least one person died in a crash on Interstate 44 near Claremore on Tuesday morning, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.
Trooper Jason McCarthy said an SUV was traveling west between Verdigris and Claremore when it hydroplaned, struck the median and then went off the roadway to the right and flipped in the grass about 10:30 a.m.
A woman who was ejected from the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. A second woman was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
Traffic was not affected in the westbound lanes of the turnpike in the area of the crash.
Investigators believe the woman who was killed was driving the vehicle. First-responders found the injured woman in the driver's seat, but trooper Dwight Durant said it appears she was sitting in the front passenger's seat when she was thrown to the other side of the SUV.
The names of the victims have not been released. More information is expected to be released today.
