Reddick, FL : 11 students injured in Marion County school bus crash on Monday, September 29, 2014
Nearly a dozen students were hurt after their school bus was involved in a three-vehicle accident while dropping off students in Marion County Monday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
A Jeep Cherokee driven by Michael Baker, 22, of Reddick was traveling north on U.S. 441 near Northwest 115th Street just after 4 p.m. when it hydroplaned and slammed into the back of a Ford Windstar driven by Luther Hawkins, 27, of Citra, troopers said. The Windstar was pushed into the back of the school bus.
Of the 40 students on the bus at the time, 11 were taken to hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to FHP. Baker, Hawkins and a passenger in Hawkins' van had minor injuries.
Baker, who told investigators he was answering his phone and was distracted just before the crash, faces a careless driving charge, troopers said.
