Quitman, GA : Brooks County man dies in crash near the county line on Wednesday, August 3, 2016
A Brooks County man died Wednesday in a wreck near the county line, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
At about 3:25 p.m., the patrol responded to a single-vehicle accident on Lawson Mill Pond Road near the Lowndes County line in Brooks County, said Cpl. Chris Kelch of the GSP.
A red 2002 Ford Explorer was heading west on Lawson Mill Pond Road when it went off the north shoulder; the driver over-corrected and the vehicle went off the south shoulder and down an embankment, Kelch said.
The vehicle overturned, struck a tree, fell back to its tires and came to a stop on the road's south shoulder, he said.
The driver, Devontae Deshawn Head, 18, of Quitman, was declared dead on the scene by the county coroner, Kelch said. He was fully restrained at the time of the collision and no airbag deployment was seen, Kelch said.
Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to have a part in the accident, he said. Head's next of kin have been notified, Kelch said.
