Ocala, FL : Five West Port High School students injured in two-vehicle crash on Southwest 38th Street in Marion County on Tuesday, March 3, 2015
Five West Port High School students were hospitalized Tuesday after a two-vehicle crash on Southwest 38th Street in Ocala.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the five — three girls and two boys, ranging in ages 16 to 18 — are expected to recover.
The students were in a 1993 Honda Accord, authorities said. Two of them had to be extricated from the car. All five were taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center.
Trooper Juan Marrero said the students were traveling east on Southwest 38th Street, and a 2014 Chevy Malibu with three adults inside was traveling west. Both cars were approaching the intersection of Southwest 38th Street and 67th Avenue.
Marrero said the 16-year-old driver of the Honda turned left into the path of the Chevy. The trooper said the Chevy could not stop in time and T-boned the Honda.
No one from the Chevy was injured.
All the teens were wearing their seat belts, officials said.
Troopers said the driver is expected to receive two citations, one for driving with a learner’s permit without a licensed driver 21 or older in the car and the second for failure to yield.
During their investigation, troopers recovered three marijuana joints from a book bag in the Honda.
Troopers were told that the students were coming from an International House of Pancakes restaurant.
