ADELANTO, CA : Missing for 5 days, woman found alive in crashed Humvee on Saturday, 29th October 2016
A woman reported missing for five days was found alive Saturday evening inside a Humvee that had wrecked and rolled down a hill west of Highway 395, authorities said.
At 6:11 p.m., San Bernardino County Fire officials received reports of a vehicle rollover in a desert area off Torosa Road and just north of Adelanto, with one occupant, described by officials only as "an older adult female," trapped in the wreckage.
A medical crew arrived on scene several minutes later and found a Humvee that had "rolled over mid-slope in an area inaccessible to fire apparatus," officials said. Sheriff's off-road patrol vehicles transported fire personnel to the crash site.
"County Firefighters and Urban Search and Rescue members stabilized the vehicle using rescue struts and also used a rope system secured to an anchor," officials said in a statement, "which prevented the vehicle from rolling further down the hill."
After securing the vehicle, fire officials rescued the woman from the Humvee, officially concluding an operation that took roughly an hour to complete.
It was during that rescue operation that fire officials discovered the woman had been reported missing for five days. She was given advanced life support treatment on scene and flown by Mercy Air to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for further care.
As of Saturday night, she was reported in serious but non-life threatening condition, fire officials said. According to Sheriff's spokesman Adam Cervantes, the woman had been reported missing from Ridgecrest.
County Fire had responded to the scene with two paramedic engines, one heavy rescue, one brush patrol and a battalion chief, amounting to 12 personnel in total.
