Austin, TX : Fleeing motorcyclist injured in crash on Tuesday, August 30, 2016
A fleeing motorcyclist crashed into an oncoming vehicle at the intersection of South 18th Street and Clay Avenue on Tuesday morning, one day after the motorcyclist fled from the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office, authorities said.
Gregory Jefferson, 27, was identified by police as the driver of a motorcycle that an officer tried to stop as he traveled south on 18th Street at 63 mph in a 30 mph zone shortly before 8:45 a.m., Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said.
As the officer turned on his emergency overhead lights, Jefferson turned his head back, indicated he saw the officer and immediately sped away.
“The motorcycle began running from our officer. Because of the traffic and where the officer was, he immediately stopped, turned his lights off and never initiated a pursuit of the motorcycle,” Swanton said. “That motorcyclist continued south on 18th Street, where he ran the first red light at 18th and Webster (Avenue) and as the motorcyclist continued fleeing from the officer, he attempted to run the light at 18th (Street) and Clay (Avenue).”
At the intersection, Jefferson struck a 2012 Ford Fusion driven by James Macy, 48, as Macy drove west on Clay Avenue, Swanton said. Jefferson was thrown from the motorcycle and was left with serious injuries. He was taken to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center. Macy was not injured, Swanton said.
“We do not have a clue as to why he wouldn’t stop for the officer,” Swanton said. “After the crash and once the officer got up to the motorcycle and were able to look at the motorcycle, we believe this motorcycle ran from another agency (Monday) afternoon in our city. The officer did not have the information this morning and that had nothing to do with our traffic stop today.”
Sheriff Parnell McNamara said a patrolling deputy spotted Jefferson driving recklessly on Highway 84, in the Woodway area, traveling at a high rate of speed Monday. The deputy attempted to pull the vehicle over near the Texas Central Parkway when Jefferson allegedly accelerated away from the officer.
“They pursed him all the way down Franklin (Avenue) and he went through the light, going in between the cars at Franklin (Avenue) and Lake Air Drive,” McNamara said. “He was driving at a high rate of speed with blatant disregard for his safety and the safety of others.”
Because of the dangerous maneuvers by Jefferson, McNamara said the deputy canceled the pursuit. Deputies filed for a felony evading arrest warrant for Jefferson late Tuesday afternoon.
Jefferson remained in Hillcrest in critical condition, hospital officials said. Swanton said Jefferson underwent emergency surgery because of massive injuries suffered in the crash.
