Newburyport, MA : Salisbury man hurt in tractor-trailer collision on Wednesday, December, 27th 2017

A 41-year-old Salisbury man was seriously injured Wednesday when his car collided with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 495 south in Littleton, causing the fuel truck to flip over on top of his vehicle.

The unidentified man, driving a Ford Focus, was trapped in the crushed car and had to freed by emergency personnel, according to Massachusetts State Police. He was then flown by helicopter to UMass Memorial in Worcester with injuries that police described in a release as "life threatening."

The Salisbury man's name and medical condition were not released. The unidentified driver of the tractor-trailer carrying home heating oil, a 52-year-old Gardner man, was taken to UMass Memorial with serious injuries not believed to be life threatening, police said. State police said on Thursday they had no additional information to release.

The collision occurred about 2:40 p.m. just before Exit 31 of I-495. State troopers from the Concord barracks responded to reports of a tractor-trailer rollover.

Trooper Giuseppe Ciampa arrived to find the overturned tractor-trailer off to the right side of the highway with the back end resting on top of the car.

A preliminary investigation determined that the Ford Focus was changing lanes when it collided with the tractor-trailer. The truck driver tried to brake and avoid hitting the car but both vehicles swerved out of control, causing the tractor-trailer to flip over.

All southbound lanes of the highway were initially closed, with the left lane reopened at 4:26 p.m.

In addition to state police, representatives from the state Department of Environmental Protection and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation responded to the accident along with members of the Littleton, Westford and Ayer fire departments.
